In addition to the iSeries solution, there is a product from MS for Sql
Server called Transaction Integrator,
part of Host Integration Server. I would be curious to hear from others
who may be using it.
It touts these features:
- i/OS data conversion through FTP or Direct DRDA Connections or Offline
connections using Visual Studio stored metadata.
- can secure Traffic with SSL or 128 encryption
- Record Level Access and Messaging using IBM Websphere MQ (think
Transaction Locking)
- Visual Studio add-ins and Wizards and code analyziers knowing about
Overlay in Data Structures in RPG and COBOL

And there is also a similar product from RazLee, the security people,
and probably other vendors
