I have been in this business for over 40 years and this is the most
realistic estimating rule of thumb that I have ever heard.
If you are a successful software developer, you must do a lot of testing
to get accurate/consistent results.
When we estimate, we usually think about the time to create the software
and underestimate the testing. Your formula automatically makes the
estimate realistic. Great concept!
One is never too smart to learn more!!

Vern -
My rule of thumb for estimating (mostly because of scope creep) is:
1) Estimate how long /you/ think it should take.
2) Double that number.
3) Change to the next higher unit of measure.
Therefore, if you estimate is one DAY, in reality it will take two
WEEKS.

Seriously, I don't know what "it" is, and I do know that all the times
I've said it's SMOP (simply a matter of programming) it's never taken
just a short time.
