I’m not sure about the performance issue, but you have to be aware that not
always %SCAN and SCAN are interchangeable. SCAN can return its results in
an array containing all the occurrences of the search in the string being
processed.
So if you need to, say, find all the occurrences of a delimiter in a string
(e.g. ‘|’), you can do it in a single sentence with SCAN, but would need to
run a loop using %SCAN. In that case, I suppose SCAN would be the faster of
the two.
