OK, I have posted some code at http://code.midrange.com/c52db1bb1f.html.
Feel free to download and tinker. No warranties, natch.

Some sample code to play with the memory routines is at
http://code.midrange.com/1e05f98b49.html.

p.s. I haven't used these for a while - they were 'gussied-up' versions of
routines that we use in-house on our Web Option product (
http://wiki.2einfo.net/index.php?title=Web_Option - sorry about the product
plug, David!) that I was going to write an article about but never got
round to... They should all compile fine, but if there are any problems,
let me know.

Nothing wrong with stepping through a large amount of data in
blocks.

In my use case, I am going to be replicating standard string functions ...
having to "window" the memory I'm scanning can be a problem if the data I'm
searching for happens to span one of those windows.

The contents of the space I'm going to be working on is text that needs to
be parsed.
