I think you'd have to use the %TRIM with two parameters:
if %trim(myfield : 'AN') <> '';
// something else is there
endif;
But I think %CHECK is clearer.
Wait, I just re-read the initial post, and Tommy's solution is good if
only one position is supposed to have an A or an N. I read it as meaning
that all the positions should have either an A or an N, like ANNNAAAAANA.
