You could do that long before the %fields() BIF by using EXCEPT vs.
write/update.

You can do that now with RLA too.
Update record %Fields(field1);
Of course you do have to read the record before you could update it.

A few things:
With SQL it is a lot easier to avoid record lock situations. (A SELECT
does not lock a record).
You can update one field only w/o touching every field in a record.
