You are right, of course. I think I may have misread Alan's original post.
If WDSc is available, it is (I think), the right tool.

In fact, that's my case. We are stuck here at V5R3, having migrated to
HP/SAP/Oracle about two years ago. Our i5 is still being used as a support
machine (historical data, BI accesing SAP data with JDBC, small auxiliary
apps, etc). I use WDSc at work, but installed RPGNextGen in my personal
laptop.
