Yeah but then how would I find out about all these RPGs that I want to play later at home? ;)

I really see no reason to change the name from RPG. Then again, I saw no reason to change the system name either. However, I will say that I actually really like that our boxes are called Power now. It's a strong word and if fully embraced, it becomes ours. Let's just hope they don't change it again (of course we've been hoping that with every change really).

If you tell someone you code in RPG, and they're disappointed that it's not a gaming language, ask them why they want to work 80-hour weeks? Every video game developer I've known works a schedule that I would never want for myself.

I, too, get frustrated searching for RPG stuff and getting hits for role playing games and rocket propelled grenades. However, changing the name will not cause the current searched items to change, which means one would have to search on multiple arguments occasionally. Plus, like System i, iSeries, etc., which is still referenced by AS/400, people will continue to call it RPG - and get emails from Trevor that we are not keeping up with the times (which are a-changing).

There have been discussions from time to time as to whether the RPG programming language should be renamed to something slightly more in tune with time or not.

Surely, when you spell it out as "Report Program Generator" it does not only give you a false perception of all the great things you can do with it (and definitely not hint at all the wonderfully advanced features we now
have) but also bring up images of quaint rulers needed to interpret compiler printouts, dusty coding sheet pads and maybe even the odd punched card.

I have sometimes have youngsters show a slight interest in my work at first, but when they find out that it is not any sort of games programming that I do they shy away.

Here we also happen to haven an organization called "RPG" which is a social club for elderly retired people. Not hip at all.

So: Should the name be changed or should't it? And to what?

Hint to IBM:ers - A contest could be in place here!
