setsockopt() is not the right choice, IMHO.

Here's my article on Timeouts with Sockets:

I have a socket client program (based in Scott Klement's socket tutorial)
that sends data to an MS server, but sometimes I don't get an
acknowledgement back from the server, (which tells me it's okay to send
more data) The iSeries status shows TIMW, and basically the program hangs
waiting for a response from the MS server. I know the issue is on the MS
server. This only happens when I send a significant amount of data to the
server and it seems the server can't handle that amount of data. A reboot
of the MS server and a restart of the socket client resolves the problem -
for awhile.

The software vendor for the MS server says to simply resend the data when
I don't get the acknowledgement, but I need a way to force the program to
stop waiting to read acknowledgement data from the server.

Can I use the setsockopt api in a socket client program to detect this
condition to specify a timeout value that would allow me to resend the
message to the server (or take an alternate course of action)?
