I had to make some minor mods (see modified code below) to get it to
compile on our v6.1 system and the value of tempvar is "Data" when I
display the variable in the MyProc subprocedure.

What would you expect tempvar to get set to? I think it would be "Data"
but I would be wrong. It gets blanks, at least on my system.
