(Cross-posted to midrange-l) I have never seen that phrase adequately
explained (let alone justified). From recent exchanges, my take on it is
that it's a cute (in some eyes) way of saying that you should use standard
F-spec type file I/O if you need cursor-type operations. The thinking, as I
understand it, being that SQL cannot compete with such operations.

I completely disagree with that sentiment, but that's my take - right or
wrong.

Then again, I'm not sure I have ever agreed with anyone who will only tell
you what's wrong, and not what's right to correct it.

I have seen it indicated in many posts in the past that if you are
using cursors
in SQL, you are doing something wrong.
If I have only RPGLE and CL to work with and SQL-CLI is not an option,
how would
I select multiple rows for a set of conditions and return them in an
ordered
condition using embedded SQL with a CURSOR?

Thanks,
