Jeff, the problem scenario is where blanks are a valid value for the array, so if the current elements were {A, blank, B, C}, the lookup would find active element 2 instead of finding the next inactive element 5.

Using the n+1 method means you don't have to even ponder the possibility that your sentinel value is also a possible valid value in your array.
