Another consideration is multiple format files. Does Open Access handle multiple formats? Specifically, if I only wanted to deal with a single format (read file) in a multiple format join logical could it be handled in Open Access or would I wind up doing all I/O for all formats in the file in the handler?

Rick, I don't think anyone has mentioned yet in this thread that using Open Access instead of SPECIAL would solve your problem. Open Access supports the random I/O opcodes.
