There aren't read triggers, at least not at 5.4. On to the next idea.

Subject: Re: Special file parameter issue
Hi, Rick:
Perhaps a SPECIAL file is not the right tool for the job? Others have
mentioned in the past that SPECIAL files were supposedly designed to
only support the model of a "sequential" file, not a keyed file, using
CHAIN, etc. :-o
Suppose you create an empty version of the file in question, and attach
insert, delete and update triggers to that copy of the file... then,
your existing program can continue to write, update or delete to a
"real" file that has exactly the same record formats, layouts., etc.,
and the trigger programs can take care of splitting up the various data
fields into one or more alternate files.
Is this not one of the scenarios that triggers were designed for?
All the best,

I am attempting to use a special file program to handle I/O for afile conversion we are contemplating. The issue I am having is that
the parameters aren't changing between a write and a read operation. I
want to test the error handling if a read operation fails. I can't get
it to fail because the parms passed are the same ones I used to add a
record even though I explicitly change them in the caller. Any ideas?
