How can one retrieve or establish the max value a numeric field can hold using SQL?

I have a need where I am copying data from 1 file to another where 1 or more
numeric source fields have values that are greater than the maximum value
that can be stored in the target field example 99,999.99 cannot be moved to
a field that is 999.99 long.



I need a SQL command or function that will allow me to test the values in a
CASE or CASE like statement.



I need to flag these records before I try to process them.
