Well O_APPEND and O_TRUNC together don't seem to make a lot of sense,
but wouldn't cause the problem you describe. Neither does the spurious
O_APPEND in the second open.
DF - I would like a document explaining the use and combinations that are
possible.

Have you looked at the code page of the file? Is it 819?
DF - I checked the code page and it is 819.

Have you deleted the file and tried over? best guess is that at some
point it was created with a different code page.
DF - I have deleted the file a few times and still get the same result.

All of this assuming that the code you show is the version is use of
course <grin>
DF - Code is identical, just removed the message part I had in it.
