One other thing David - you don't mention it, but have you run this in
debug mode. Sometimes doing it this way shows things that may not be
readily apparent

We don't see the remainder of the code after the update but are you doing
another Readc before the end of the loop? If not then the second iteration
through the loop[ would cause the error you're experiencing..
