There is one other minor advantages of this approach. A program can be called and told to shut itself down, which facilitates replacement in a live situation.

And of course telling it to shut down and then restarting it (by calling it again) allows for file overrides etc. to be changed without additional coding for USROPN etc.

Not big things but when you add them all together the savings add up.
