Just realized that the approaches suggested so far will not work if the string Michael has _is_ a hex string in character form. His subject line said "binary" so I took him at his word but all his references are to hex so if that really is the case ...

What he may need is the cvthc/cvtch APIs - see http://faq.midrange.com/data/cache/114.html for examples.
