I thought I was on the right path with this, but am still stuck. Based upon these IAC's, can anyone tell me what I need to send back to just get to a login prompt? No matter what I am sending, I never receive anything back, it just hangs.

My guess is that you're not responding correctly :) See my previous append (sent yesterday and which is in the archives but for some reason a copy was never sent to me so perhaps no-one else saw it either) which briefly says how you should deal with stuff your client/ server doesn't understand/accept.

Do I need to respond one at a time, or can I respond to all with one write to the socket?

The last paragraph in Section 3 of RFC draft-ietf-tn3270e- tn5250e-05.txt says:

Some negotiations are symmetrical between client and server and some are negotiated in one direction only. Also, it is permissible and common practice to bundle more than one response or request, or combine a request with a response, ...

I can find very little on this via google.

Both Scott and I told you to read the various TELNET RFCs. They explain the process quite well. Scott provided a source of direct links and

should help.

I would think more folks would have a need to do this. I can think of lots of uses.

Hardly anyone has need to write a new TELNET client or server. Existing tools are generally good enough since any Telnet client that implements a basic NVT can (should be able to) connect to any socket server and allow manual sending of commands to test said server.
