I was so fixated on the exfmt verb that I'd forgotten about a normal write/read. In fact it exposes an issue I've been worried about for a while. I've been working with a package for over 20 years now and the (bad) habit of continually cloning has made me realize that de-skilling occurs. I have used write/read way back in the past, but so long ago that I just forgot about it in the rush to get this thing working. In my head I was imaging the input coming from the control record part of the subfile control. As always, your assistance was concise and erudite. Thanks for not (deservedly) biting my head off.
