Jerry -
Sounds like you don't have a secondary Internet provider in the case of
failure. For small businesses, CradlePoint advertises their routers as
being perfect for such purposes. They use a broadband wireless device or
cellular telephone for secondary internet connectivity.

First - thanks for all the responses. Second let me answer a few
questions:
"Just the fact that the CC transaction software didn't return a response?"
It did return a response but since our internet connection died for 3.5
hours we were unable to receive the response.
"Not knowing exactly how you post the transaction, but assuming it is an
HTTP(s) post."
I have no idea how it's posted, but this is not an web/HTTP application.
It's a green screen app that feeds a data queue that is accessed by the
Payware application (subsystem), and processed by that package.
"I think you need to base the up/down decision on results. If you get a
response back (within whatever parameters), the connection is up...if not,
it's down. And when it's down, you set a flag that stops processing."
Exactly!
Sounds like the basic socket open/close option is the way to go. PING
sounds like it could be unreliable.
Thanks!
