The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.
As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.

I often read about the overhead involved in opening a file in a

exactly involved?
I would be willing to provide some input on the topic, rather
than [a link to] any official documentation; I know of none.
However, on Midrange-L, since file open is not specific to any HLL.
Note also that a file open is somewhat generic; i.e. a "file" may
be a STMF, a DLO, a database, or some variety of a device file.
Presumably the interest is in the database file.member open, of
which I can provide the best information versus the others.
