There is no law that says a procedure can't modify parameters. You can
do PRECISELY what you want as stated.

MyDate = JoinDate(YY : MM : DD);
-or-
JoinDate(MyDate : YY : MM : DD);

SplitDate(MyDate : YY : MM : DD);

You missed his point. Sometimes MM is packed, sometimes it is in other
formats. He lamented that he'd need a different procedure for each format
(and potentially for each permutation of possible combinations).
