problem, why not post the code at http://code.midrange.com/ and link to it

Hi Terri,

I think there must be another error in your program that is leading to
this. Are there other errors on the compile? For example is field FshDte
defined differently elsewhere in the program?

As a process of elimination... does the following 4 line program compile
for you? If it does, then your problem is elsewhere.

D FshDte S 8 0 INZ(0)
C *DTAARA DEFINE FSHDTE FshDte
C *LOCK IN FshDte
C EVAL *InLr = *On

Or better still...

D FshDte S 8 0 INZ(0) Dtaara
/free
in *lock fshDte;
*InLr = *On ;

Just to clarify on some of the answers you got...

The DEFINE operation simply associates a data area with a variable. It
means that when you use the IN and OUT operation with the variable name
that this is the data area to be used
They can be the same name - but they do not have to be.
The name of the data area can be up to 10 characters (as with any
object). The name of the variable can be up to 4098 characters long - as
with any variable in RPG.
The name of the data area is implicitly in upper case (you only have to
watch object names if they are in quotes).
The data area does NOT need to exist when you are compiling the program.
If the data area does exist at compile time the compiler does NOT check
it - you will get a run time error if there is a mis-match between the
variable and the data area.

Hi,
We are at V5R4. I originally had the data area named FISHDATE
(fishmouth pieces of pipe). I changed it to FSHDTE in case it didn't like
8 characters. I have off tomorrow, but will be tackling this again on
Monday, Thanks for all the help so far.
