right away and move it to internal program storage, there could still be
trouble down the road. I tried that once, and found that storage in
programs that are not in the call stack can get moved. I was left with a
pointer that no longer referenced the expected data. That was before RPG
supported static variables though.

A better (safer) way might be to set the pointer to internal storage in
the calling program, and just let the called program put the data in
that location. If the data need to be shared between multiple programs,
a data space would work. Exported service program variables are also a
possibility.
