When I have the third parameter of regcomp set to 0 (REG_BASIC), the
pattern compiles, but the RegEx fails with - regexec() failed to find a
match.

When I have the third parameter of regcomp set to 1 (REG_EXTENDED), the
regcomp fails with: $ anchor not at end of regular expression.

This seems a bit odd because the $ anchor is very definitely at the end
of the pattern.

Have I done something stupid or is there some other parameter setting I
need?

Is your pattern in a non-varying-length field? If so, and if the length of
the field is greater than the length of the pattern, you'll get this error.
