Documentation is good, but you can test these things yourself with a
short test program - just focus on the issue - do the comparison with
both padded and non-padded values, see if your results are the same.
The
length doesn't have to be great - 10 character variables ought to be
enough.

I understand the concept, Vern, but this approach can lead one astray. The
undocumented feature of today could well be overridden by the patched bug of
tomorrow. When it's documented, it's bound to be pretty solid since IBM
(unlike their primary competition) are notorious for their attention to
upward compatibility.
