The original post was requesting a way to detetct when someone has cancelled a never ending batch job so the program can take action to shut down gracefully.

Some of us pointed out that a better way to go would be to wait on a data queue and send a special entry to to the queue to initiate shut down of the job.

The original poster decided that he was going to have his job look for the appearance of a special file in the IFS (like ENDJOB.TXT) to initiate shutdown.

Seems like a lot of work to avoid using data queues :) However,
if you are going to monitor for the existance of a file to
trigger an event, why don't you just look for an object, like a
data area. You just have to use CHKOBJ.

It's possible that I've lost track of the point to the thread. I had
the impression that there was an earlier question about detecting
the arrival of streamfiles in a directory.

I've kind of assumed that 'arrival' would mean something like a
customer or trading partner or similar would FTP a file to some
target directory like [/incoming], or perhaps that users would
drag/drop files into a mapped drive, or some other networked process
would add streamfiles at unpredictable intervals.

If I FTP a .PDF file to your FTP target directory, how will you know
it has arrived and what will your CHKOBJ look like? If files are
coming unpredictably, how will you know what to check for? What will
be putting entries on a data queue?
