The OPM program is not currently using any variable-length fields. In fact,
I have never used a vary-length field in an OPM program. As far as I know,
the only way to use varying-length fields in OPM is to use the
CVTOPT(*VARCHAR) option when using a file that has variable-length fields
defined, and we have never used that compile option, since we don't have any
files (this is legacy JDE stuff) with varying-length fields.

As I indicated in the OP, from my OPM program I need to call an RPGIV
program that expects a varying-length value to be passed in the first
parameter. I haven't tried your suggestion yet, but rather than creating a
binary field for the length in front of my data field in my OPM program, I
think that my idea of a wrapper program will be easier to implement and less
confusing to the other programmers that work here.
