I'm sorry that my formulation of the sentence has left the impression that I'm frustrated (I'm usually quite relaxed... at least, that's how I like to think of me).
Anyway, the problem with your mail is that there was no real question there. You write that there are indisplayable characters on the screen which are the result of a copy/paste action from out of Word, which are passed on to the RPG program. That is in my eyes just a description of a situation:
- Users use copy paste to save them from entering data twice (logical, users -like good programmers- are lazy: they use copy-copy)
- Word has a lot of hidden characters, most of them are quite enigmatic in nature and meaning (logical, Microsoft Office is not using open standards, so nobody except Microsoft knows all the ins and outs)
- Windows has a copy/paste function, which does what it is designed to do: copy all the selected text and paste all the copied text. It would be strange if the programmes would, on their own accord, remove data from the copied-text-to-be-pasted just because it felt like it. It does not know to which application the text will be pasted, so it won't (well... give Microsoft half a chance and it will insert some subliminal messages as well).
- DDS is just the messenger, so if you enter a text (in whatever language, with any means) it will pass it on to the processing program. DDS does hardly any processing itselve, and it will -like the copy/paste function described earlier- not remove any data.
So..... what is the question? What error do you get (did you get any error)? What was the expected behaviour? Was that behaviour programmed (or even specified)? Was it tested before it was placed in production?
All these questions... and none of this I could read in your mail. Even the last part of the mail ("or did I answer my own question" - or words to that effect) suggested to me at least that you didn't pose a question...
There are a multitude of possibilities even the terminal-emulation program could be part of the problem (incorrect ascii to ebcdic conversion for instance), yet you suggest that we should know enough to answer the question (which again is not really asked)....
No, I was not frustrated, I was disappointed.
I hope that in the meantime your question was picked up by others and answered...

Are you seriously trying to get this question answered by the
group or are you just venting some frustration?
Blimey, Cor not at all. Although you sound frustrated yourself. What's
the problem with my message?
