The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.
As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.

Good afternoon.
Please excuse the rudimentary level of my question but I don't have local
resources to whom I can address the question.
In an application system there are multiple requirements to generate a
random number. The data to drive the generation process is located in
several different files; the logic by which this number is generated is
closely guarded. It is for these reasons we want to create a callable
routine that returns the random number. The random number generator will be
called from at least 6 different application programs.
I understand how a programmer passes parameters to a called program but how
does a programmer structure the called program to pass a parameter back to
the calling program? And what has to be done within the calling program to
receive the parameter being passed by the called program?
