Well, on V5R4 I can define variables like procedures if the procedure
returns a value

Given that, I think your second version is more complicated than necessary.
In the case of input parameters, I generally only define "types" in the
copy member in the case of data structure parameters. If I were writing
writeText(), I'd have used a named constant for the maximum line length
or put the line break logic into the writeText() procedure.
