I think David's question comes from prior admonishments not to use SQL
for record-at-a-time access; use RPG for RLA and SQL for set at a
time.

I'll leave that alone. :-)

Overall, good guideance, but as my first response says, a single
statement by itself is not usually GOOD or BAD.

Fair enough.

What he's doing around that statement would make a difference.

A HUGE difference. First off, that's at least two different IOs in a RLA
mode, since he's doing a join. And if the join is serving to limit the
selected rows in the first table then it could be many more IOs in RLA
land.
