Well the main reason why I didn't respond to this email is because in
all honesty, I couldn't think of what I have done in /free that couldn't
be done in RPG IV (albeit uglier).
However, when talking about the ILE environment, I've developed a
different sort of mental approach to certain things--essentially
encapsulation. This is handy for any kind of common or generic output
that is used across multiple programs. For instance, we have one print
file used in what seems like a hundred programs. I have an idea to move
the print file into a service program and have that handle overflow and
the such.
On that note, I'm pretty sure the file encapsulation utility, which I
was very proud of, that I sent out to a number of people didn't work at
all. (A lack of foresight on a couple aspects of it.) Unfortunately no
one actually spoke up (I came to the realization at my new job--where
I've fixed it, but can't repackage it as v5r3 anymore).
