It seems obvious that the table cannot be labeled both FILE and NAME. In order for the compiler to resolve the external definitions of the table, FILE must be the name of the table on disk, or you must use an OVRDBF command prior to the compilation for the resolution to occur. If I am incorrect in this analysis, please let us know the actual name of the table as it exists on disk.

Ergo, NAME is a variable, which must be defined and populated. (Re: alternative #2). By the way, EXTMBR( ) is only needed if the table has multiple members AND you want a member other than the *First member.

HI Jerry,

I tried the same with the new code as below:

FFILE IF E DISK EXTFILE(NAME)
F EXTMBR(NAME)
F USROPN
C OPEN FILE
C READ REC
C FIRSTNAME DSPLY
C CLOSE FILE
C SETON LR

It still gives me the same problem.... NAME is the PF name as on disk.
also, it has the member name as NAME too.

Still have the same problem :-(

If NAME is a variable, which is more likely in this case, you need to:
a) still remove the quotes,
b) define the variable in the D-specs, and
c) populate the value of NAME (either as an INZ( ) on the D-spec or in
Calcs.

Thanks.

Subject: Error in EXTFILE

Dear All,

I am trying to make a simple program out of EXTFILE and EXTMBR concept.
However, my system never identifies the file and gives me "The name or
indicator is not defined." Errors. I have setup the library list correctly
which contains the PF.

Program:
FFILE IF E DISK EXTFILE('NAME')
F EXTMBR('NAME')
F USROPN
C OPEN FILE
C READ REC
C FIRSTNAME DSPLY
C CLOSE FILE
C SETON LR

PF: NAME
R REC
FIRSTNAME 10A

Any idea where am I going wrong here ?

Regards and Thanks
Manish
