You could check out the bitmatch() utility I wrote and published in the
iSeriesNetwork magazine:

http://systeminetwork.com/article/utility-simplify-working-bits

You call bitmatch() passing the field to test and a string of '0's, '1's and
'x's. 0's will be compared with 'off' bits, 1's will be compared with 'on'
bits and x's will be ignored. So if you need to find out whether the 7th bit
is on, you'd do this:

if bitmatch( charField : 'xxxxxxx1' );
// bit 7 is on - other bit values are ignored
endif;
