The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.
As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.
If you know of an easy to use, open source, search engine ... please contact support@midrange.com.

The API unfortunately won't do you any good in correcting the malformed character data after the fact -- it expects good input to start with.
Don't be to sure about that. The OP said he still had the long data,
so it'd probably be easier to write a quick routine that uses the
QLGTRDTA api to reload the short field from the long.
If it was me, I'd consider putting a *BEFORE UPDATE/INSERT trigger on
the file that made use of the API to correct the data going into the
short field while I was waiting on a fix from the vendor.
