True, IBM will spot overlaid characters in a print stream and will
render that as bold text, in both impact printers AND page printers. In
the latter case, HPT see the overstrike and then changes those
characters to bold. However, I'm not sure this make the problem at hand
any easier. You would have to build to two output DS's, one containing
all output data, and the other containing only overstrike characters....
With 100+ fields, seems things could get a little hairy.....

Generally, in my experience, if you output the same data in the same
place on the same line twice, it acts like HIGHLIGHT. So, he could have
as many named EXCEPT lines as he likes, and do it all in the C-Specs,
using no indicators whatsoever?

Yeah, except that he wants indicators to set HIGHLIGHT attribute....

The OP indicates that a single line of the report could have more than
100 fields, exceeding his ability to control output individually...It seems to me that perhaps a better (or at least different) way of building the line might be preferable. Why not build it in (say) a DS
with overlapping fields where needed. Couldn't be any more confusing than any print line that needs more than 100 indicators!
