The CPF0864 is what you have to use in CL for testing EOF in a loop - in Donna's original post she left out the DCLF of some other file being read.

So in truth, this usage is not a bad technique - if it were some other kind of expected message, it would be perhaps recommended to do a DO/ENDDO block with a RCVMSG RMV(*YES) to clean up the joblog. That could even be done here, since you don't really need to know in the joblog that you came to EOF - RPG doesn't do that, and in C you set some value to prevent the C2* messages for this kind of thing - IIRC.

But I'm trying to read Simon's mind from across the ocean - best way to misunderstand someone!!!! I'm not sure what issue is being addressed.

Vern

You won't know for certain whether CPYF in arrival sequence, or CPYF in keyed
sequence, or RPG is faster without performing a proper test.
My question is: If the CPYF method is fast enough why are you bothering about
it?

MONMSG MSGID(CPF0864) EXEC(GOTO CMDLBL(END))

And fix this rubbish too. See the archives for the correct way to handle
expected error messages in CL.

Simon Coulter.
