Here is a choice which I hesitate to mention because its so... rookie. However, you can use an input capable field and protect it. Check to see if the cursor is in that field, and if it is, then do the associated action. (I use this technique to specify column headings in sortable subfiles. Clicking a column heading = sort by that column. Click again on the same column heading = sort in reverse order). The field can say anything you want it to say. Its sort of like a pushbutton.

By the way, you can also easily program pushbuttons and not use an F-Key at all.
