The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.
As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.

Dereferencing a pointer is asking for the value(s) that it points to.
In RPG you can use %Str() or a variable Based() on a pointer.
%STR doesn't precisely dereference a pointer. IT actually makes a
VARYING string from a pointer by searching the memory after the pointer
for a x'00', and copying everything before that x'00' into a VARYING
string, then it returns the VARYING string.
So while you might use %STR to view the memory at a given address
(provided that there's no unexpected x'00' in that space) it's not quite
as simple as dereferencing the pointer.
A BASED variable is the correct way to reference a pointer in RPG.
