It's been my experience that users (unless they've been using 5250 for many years) get confused with the need to do things like field+, field-, field exit, etc. They find it cumbersome and confusing.

If you define the field on the screen as alpha, and use a tool like %DEC() to make it numeric, they find it much more intuitive.

You have to move the field from the db file to the display file and
back again anyway, so there's no extra work involved.
