True, but James didn't say they were in different jobs.

I use a copy book for my LDA definitions, which starts out like this:

D UDS DTAARA(*LDA)
D L$PREF 1 1A
D L$CONO 2 3S 0
D L$DVNO 4 5S 0

There is no IN or anything else involved. The cycle (whoo hoo!) does all of that for you, James. As soon as the program fires up, L$PREF, etc., are available to the program with whatever value was placed in it. Such that, for example, the very first instruction in the program could be:

IF l$pref = 'X';
(do stuff)
ENDIF;

I recommend a copy book for the LDA because I've seen too many people screw up the start and end positions and bite themselves in the tush. Plus, for us lazy programmers it's less keying.

if the programs run in different jobs there's no way to communicate via
LDA. each job has it's own LDA.

Thanks,

Can somebody point me in the direction of an example of two ILE RPG
programs, neither of which calls the other, communicating with each
other via the Local Data Area?

Preferably without doing an IN on all *DTAARAs known to the program?

When I RTFM on this one, all it does is make me go cross-eyed.
