Anybody ever try to use the Starting Line Number feature (SLNO) of DDS? I'd
like to use the *VAR functionality (which is supposed to allow me to specify
the Starting Line Number where a record format will be displayed, from
within my program), but nowhere does it tell me how to set the value of the
presumed variable. Exactly what is the variable name to use? The DDS
manual does not say to create a System field, nor is there a way to
reference it in my program. I've googled this spec as well, and found
nothing useful.

You can use the SLN keyword to identify the variable (RPG III and IV). RPG requires that the variable be defined as 2 digits long.

Fmydspf cf e workstn sln(startLine)
D startLine s 2p 0
C eval startLine = 5
C exfmt rec
/free
startLine = 5;
exfmt rec;

There might also be a way to identify a system field within the DDS, but I only know about the SLN keyword.
