I initially wondered that too but the documentation says %subdt
EXTRACTS a value from a date which is why I suggested a data
structure to set the day component. That is different from %subst
which can be used on either side of an expression. While not as
explicit as the documentation for %DAYS, %MONTHS, and %YEARS, %SUBDT
also can only be used on the right-hand side of an expression. Trying
your code will result in RNF0955 - Item not valid on left-hand side
of an EVAL operation.
Note that IF this worked the name of the variable "today" would be
poorly chosen because the resulting date would no longer BE today
(except for one day a month).
