I guess it depends on how complicated you want to make things, but...

If you use data structures (like in my example) but read the file using the ILE C _Ropen(), _Rreadn(), _Rreadk, et al, functions, you can continue to use the DSes, but can get the null information.

These ILE C functions can be called from RPG pretty easily.
