Use %trim with the optional parameter that says which character to trim - I don't have the syntax with me now.

Hello list,

I have a field that is string of 22 positions with a value of 0000317982.
I need to trim the zeros on the left to have only the value of 317982 and
move it to another string field.

I have tried to convert it to numeric but it gives me leading blanks "
317982000000000000".

To get it INTO a numeric field, you need to add or remove leading zeros
to make it the exact length of the target field, then stick it into a
zoned field.

To simply remove leading zeros, on the other hand, try repeatedly
substringing it to cut off the leftmost character until that leftmost
character is a nonzero digit.
