The time differences are amazing. How does SQL process all this data in
less then 9 seconds? I understand there are differences in how SQL and
RPG are implemented, but it seems a large difference.

SQL is processing data at the machine level. With RPG every record has to come up through the interface. If you put the SQL statement you ran in RUNSQLSTM in the program, you should get even better performance since it can build an access plan and store it where with RUNSQLSTM, it has to create the access plan every time.

You can also go into Operations Navigator and type in your SQL Statement and run visual explain and it will show you exactly how it is processing your statement.
