Your responseds confirm my confusion about the whole thing.

I was suprised to get a file like this also, and won't get a chance to
talk to the client until next week about the date structure. Not really
expecting to gain anything.

Char_date is a numeric field, I'm still toying around with the code, so
haven't change the final version.
I also like your code idea, simple, but effective for the situation as
long as I test the result for validity.

Probably what we were doing way back there in prehistoric times( before
y2k)
